You may be wondering what this means for your child in their reading for pleasure choices. Should fiction be off limits? No way!
Students will always find a wide variety of fiction materials in our media center. We will continue to add new fiction books and will encourage students to read what they love. Having a love of reading is the most important way to ensure that students become lifelong readers and learners. Fiction books have significant value because they offer challenging vocabulary and encourage imagination and creativity.
What difference will you see in the media center collection and in the books that we encourage your student to read? We will continue to add high quality non-fiction texts to the library collection. You and your students will see a lot of new narrative non-fiction which is informational text presented in the format of a story. We will match fiction to non-fiction in order to encourage your student to develop and expand upon interests that encourage inquiry.
For example, if your student is reading a fictional story like The Lightening Thief Series we would encourage them to explore Greek myths and legends and would continue with books that explore the Greek Culture. Older students might be interested in learning more about current events like the Greek financial crisis and connecting it to the current US economy. These are the types of fiction/Non-Fiction connections that will help your child learn to enjoy and seek out Non-Fiction texts.
As always, if you need more information or your student needs help finding a great book to read please come find me in the library.
