Make Summer reading a ritual by making it part of everyday fun
-Take a field trip to the public library, pick out a few books and go have a family reading picnic
-Lay out a blanket in the yard under the stars and read scary stories with a flashlight
-Listen to books on tape in the car during your summer road trips
-Read aloud to your kids- No matter how old they are. Reading aloud is a great way to promote reading for enjoyment. Check the media center blog for read aloud recommendations.
Find Motivation that works for your kids
-Have your kids do a weekly report or put on a skit or do some other project to tell you about the books they have read.
-Find a magazine that interest your kids and get a subscription for the summer.
-Join the summer reading program at the public library
-Start a book club with your neighborhood friends- Parent and child book clubs are fun and motivating. Meet up with your club at the pool and discuss the book over a picnic.
